What happens during a visit to the outpatient clinic?

Your appointments card shows what therapists you are to see on the day of your appointment. When you arrive in the outpatient clinic, you report your arrival to the medical secretary at the big desk. Then you go to the laboratory, where your blood glucose and HbA1c will be measured and you will be weighed, and possibly other blood tests will be taken as previously agreed. In the laboratory you are given name labels, which you deliver to the nurse at the small desk.  She will coordinate your visit and show you the way to the therapists you are to see on this particular day.

When your visit is over, you and your therapist jointly plan the next visit with a view to date, time, blood test and examination. Then you receive a status sheet to be handed in to the medical secretary at the big desk. She will then book your appointment.

How often will I have to come to check-ups/visits in the outpatient clinic?
We arrange the number of visits and their frequency in the outpatient clinic with each patient individually. On average there will be three to four months between each visit, unless otherwise agreed. In periods of your life you may need closer contact with the therapist, e.g. if you are young, or pregnant, or attend a teaching course in our type 2 clinic.
Every second year you will need to have a status examination. It consists of a visit to a nurse and a subsequent visit to a doctor. A status visit is an overall assessment of your diabetes. After this your doctor will be informed.

How can I be referred to your outpatient clinic?
You can be referred to the outpatient clinic by your own doctor or other hospitals. Steno Diabetes Center is not covered by the law on free choice of hospital, which means that the municipality/region has to approve your attending Steno Diabetes Center.

What happens after I have been referred, and what happens at my first visit?
If you have been referred to us for treatment, a consultant will assess the referral in respect of the treatment to be offered. You will then be given a date and time by letter for visiting the Center.

At your first visit we shall discuss our treatment offer with you, including medicine, screening for complications, diet, exercise, lifestyle and teaching, irrespective of whether you have been referred to the outpatient clinic, the type 2 clinic or the day-bed unit. You are very welcome to bring along a relative for the visit to outpatient clinic.
