STAR

STAR is an abbreviation of Steno Training and Application of Resources courses. It is an international education project that supports education in diabetes in developing countries.

The mission of the STAR-project: through educational activities to increase knowledge of diabetes in developing countries, currently in India and China.

Accordingly, the project’s aim is to improve the treatment of persons with diabetes in India and China by:

  • providing education in team-based diabetes management ”The Steno way”
  • disseminating knowledge of the latest research and its clinical application in the area of diabetes

Background of the STAR project
In 1999, the Novo Nordisk Foundation made the decision to support diabetes education in developing countries, and based on the report by Christian Binder, the STAR-project was established. India and China were initially chosen because of the explosive development in these two countries of type 2 diabetes. India and China also lacked treatment options, research and further education.

The STAR project was implemented in close collaboration with the local offices of Novo Nordisk. This meant that local educational activities, resources and faculties were also involved.

The Steno Education Center compiles and delivers the education programme in the countries involved.

The STAR-project aims to run two course types:

1. Practical Diabetology

Lectures on prevention, management and complications of diabetes, learning-by-doing, the organisation of diabetes management, teamwork, communication, quality assurance and development of one’s own clinic.
Target group: diabetes management teams, i.e., doctors, nurses or educators.

2. Refresher courses
Lectures on prevention, management and complications of diabetes, group sessions, learning-by-doing.
Target group: doctors working within diabetology

Personnel
The STAR courses are run by Steno Education Center. Educators are physicians from Steno Diabetes Center and external diabetes experts.
In addition to the doctors, two specialist diabetes nurses and a podiatrist teach on the practical diabetology courses. An Indian dietician and an Indian diabetologist also participate on the courses in India, where their specialised local knowledge is a valuable contribution.
