Courses for the primary care sector

The aim is to:
• increase knowledge of diabetes, with special attention on early recognition of the disease and diabetes management in the fast growing group of people with type 2 diabetes
• increase theoretical and practical knowledge of insulin and other therapies to facilitate their use in primary care
• increase participants’ understanding of the psychosocial impact diabetes may have on the life of an individual with the disease

The course includes
• information on type 1 and type 2 diabetes and how to distinguish between the types, early recognition and management of the disease with emphasis on type 2 diabetes
• living with a chronic disease: insight into a life with diabetes
• practical information about diabetes management, medicine, insulin, injection technique, and monitoring blood glucose
• information about identifying and managing hypo- and hyperglycemia
• information about diabetic complications and prevention

The course comprises lectures, discussions, knowledge sharing and a workshop offering the opportunity to practice various techniques. Emphasis is on the human aspect, i.e., focus is on the individual with his/her life conditions, rather than on the disease. This puts the individual’s life quality in the forefront of prevention, care and management of the diabetes.

On the course the DAWN project is described by the diabetes nurse.
