The result of the union of Hvidøre hospital and Niels Steensens hospital in 1991 called for a logo, and a competition was run to find one. Quang, from the clinical biochemistry department, came up with the winning idea, which was elaborated by Novo Nordisk’s head designer, Jytte Ulrich, and chief physician, Christian Binder.
The six turquoise balls represent the many balls that a person with diabetes must juggle in order to remain in healthy balance. They symbolise the smallest natural insulin molecule, which is composed of six identical parts forming a hexagram. If the three lines in each ball are extended, they form a triangle. The idea behind this being, that thoughts are then directed towards the cornerstones of diabetes treatment: physical activity, diet and insulin. The colour blue was chosen as it is used by Novo Nordisk to represent business partnerships.
