Significant events in Steno Diabetes Center's history.



1921  Scientists discover how to extract insulin form the pancreas of animals. 
1922  The Danish professor and Nobel Prize winner August Krogh is granted the rights to produce insulin in Denmark. 
1923  Nordisk Insulin Laboratorium is founded by August Krogh, Dr Hans Christian Hagedorn and August Kongsted who owns Løvens Kemiske Fabrik. (LEO)
1925  Novo Terapeutisk Laboratorium is established by the two brothers Thorvald and Harald Petersen. 
1932  Steno Memorial Hospital is established by Nordisk Insulin Laboratorium. 
1935 The long-acting insulin, protamininsulin, is developed.  
1938  Novo establishes Hvidøre Diabetes Laboratory (later named Hvidøre Hospital). 
1957  Niels Steensens's Research Laboratory is established by Nordisk Insulin Laboratory and is renamed Hagedorn Research Laboratory in 1978. 
1964  Novo Research Institute is established. 
1980  The treatment with insulin pumps is initiated at Steno Diabetes Center. 
1982  Microalbuminuria is a predictor of nephropathy. 
1983  Antihypertensive treatment retards the development of diabetic nephropathy. 
1988  Systematic eye screening is introduced at Hvidøre Hospital and is continued after the merger in 1991. 
1989  Novo and Nordisk Insulin Laboratorium (Nordisk Gentofte) merge to Novo Nordisk A/S. 
1991  Steno Memorial Hospital and Hvidøre Hospital merge to Steno Diabetes Center. The inauguration was in 1992 when the new name also became official. 
1991  Beneficial effect of treatment of microalbuminruia with ACE-inhibitors. 
2000  The Type 2 Clinic is established. 
2001  Steno Diabetes Center and Rigshospitalet create the Diabetes Unit at Rigshospitalet. 
2001  The Electronic Medical Record is implemented at Steno Diabetes Center. 
2003  Multifactorial treatment halves the number of cardiovascular diseases in type 2 diabetes.  
2007  The Clinical Research Unit, CRU, is established to improve conditions for clinical research at Steno Diabetes Center. 
2008  Multifactorial treatment halves the mortality rate in type 2 diabetes. 
2009  Steno Diabetes Center is separated into a limited company and becomes Steno Diabetes Center A/S. 
2010 Steno Health Promotion Center is officially open.
