Steno Symposium

175 from 27 different countries participated in the Steno Symposium in May. The topic for the symposium was ‘Novel Insights in Diabetes Mellitus and its Complications’. Several researchers in this field gave a presentation on the topic, among them 11 speakers from abroad.

05 January
On January 1st 2009 the research area has been changed, as three of the research teams are organisational belonging under Hagedorn Research Institute. The three teams are researching in molecular genetics (Oluf Pedersen), immunology type 1 diabetes (Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen) and genetics protetmic (Flemming Pociot).

06 November
Vibeke Zoffmann, PhD MPH RN, has been appointed as senior researcher at Steno Diabetes Center. She has developed a flexible program for young adults 18-35 years based on Guided Self-Determination. She will soon start implementing this program in the outpatient clinic.

The Danish National Indicator Project (NIP) measures the quality of care provided by the hospitals to groups of patients with specific medical conditions as diabetes. Steno Diabetes Center has reported data for all our patients in the clinic (data like blodd pressure, HbA1c, lipids).

Award to Gitte Andersen
Gitte Andersen, MSc, PhD. and post.doc., has received the talent award 2008 from the Bagger Soerensen Foundation. She is given the award due to her exceptional contribution in investigating the molecular disease processes in genes that is leading to obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart diseases.

New initiatives with focus on treatment
In collaboration with the managements of Steno Diabetes Center (SDC) and Hagedorn Research Institute (HRI), Novo Nordisk has decided to implement a number of initiatives to ensure the continued strengthening of treatment, research, development and education in diabetes. The Steno-2 Follow-up Study:
Intensive global risk intervention reduces all-cause- and cardiovascular mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes
Steno-2 Study, a prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded trial has previously shown that intensified multifactorial intervention-with the use of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockers, aspirin, lipid-lowering agents and a more tight glucose regulation compared with usual multifactorial treatment in line with national guidelines cuts the risk of microvascular complications and nonfatal cardiovascular disease by half in patients with type 2 diabetes and microalbuminuria. Read more

The Frontiers symposim - an unqualified succes

Frontiers in Diabetes Research and Clinical Diabetology 2008 has just been held successfully in Copenhagen with 180 participants from 25 different nations. This year’s programme was very varied with topics as diabetes burden in the society, impact of hyperglycaemia, treatment modalities in type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 based therapies, feet need friends and painful diabetic neuropathy. Steno Education Center was the organizer of the symposium and was praised for the scientific programme as well as for the social programme that included a bike ride in the Deer garden and a visit to Steno Diabetes Center.

 

15 April
Strike in the Danish Healthcare System on Wednesday 16 April
The ourpatient clinic, the ward and the Diabetes Unit are all closed during the strike among nurses and social and healthcare assistants. Only patients who needs urgent treatment will be treated by a healthcare provider.

Patients who have appointments later than Wednesday 16 will be informed by letter.
Patients who are participating in projects in the Research Unit still have their appointments unless they have been informed by the staff.

New study shows that ambitious health goals are life saving in people with type 2 diabetes
Early and intensive intervention with multiple drug combinations showed sustained beneficial effect with respect to rates of death from any cause and vascular complications. Read the article

New courses in cooking is offered for people in the outpatient clinic. The courses starts in October and there will be both mornings and afternoon sessions. Please register for the course at the nurse in the outpatient clinic.
