Podiatrists

The clinic is open during the opening hours of the outpatient clinic:
• Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 to 16:00
• Tuesdays from 8:00 to 18:00, with an additional afternoon consultation with an orthopaedic surgeon from the wound centre at Bispebjerg Hospital
• on Wednesdays, one podiatrist works in the diabetes unit in Rigshospitalet
• Thursdays and Fridays from 8:00 to 13:00

The work of the foot clinic
The podiatrists carry out foot examinations to identify foot conditions in high-risk patients with diabetes. The examination includes advice on wound management and prevention, selection of appropriate footwear and information about the importance of regular foot therapy.

All acute foot ulcers, and leg wounds are treated. Non-infected superficial wounds are debrided and pressure is relieved by cushioning footwear or an aircast boot.
If there are signs of infection, a management plan is drawn up in collaboration with a doctor from the outpatient clinic. Treatment may include antibiotics and a check-up visit to the orthopaedic surgeon. Advice is given on footwear to cushion and redistribute pressure, and any orthopaedic footwear the patient may have is checked.

Collaboration
As well as collaborating with the orthopaedic surgeon, the podiatrists work in close cooperation with the health professionals in the outpatient clinic and on the outpatient ward. This cooperation extends to the district health care services in various municipalities and to podiatrists, orthotists and prosthetists in the local area.

Courses and other activities
The podiatrists teach on the K2 course run by the type 2 clinic and instruct in foot surveillance and preventive care. They also offer education for other health care professionals, both internally and externally.
