Research Department

Research is crucial to us if we are to improve diabetes prevention and treatment of the disease as well as the late-stage complications that can arise. At Steno Diabetes Center we have a long-standing tradition of conducting studies, which has helped increase our knowledge of diabetes and improve both the treatment and the prognosis for patients with diabetes.

As a patient at Steno Diabetes Center, you could be asked if you would like to participate in a research project run by either the Research Department or the Clinical Research Unit. If you meet the criteria for participation in the study – and if you feel brave enough to participate – your outpatient check-ups will be done in the Research Department. All examinations will take place in the Research Department while you are participating in the study, both routine examinations and other examinations related to the research project. The Research Department is on the first floor above the outpatient clinic, and the Clinical Research Unit is in the hospital building on the fourth floor.

Presentation of the Research Department
The Research Department, found on the first floor above the outpatient clinic, consists of several research groups, each managed by a senior consultant (who has overall responsibility), and is staffed by several junior doctors and laboratory technicians, a diabetes nurse and a secretary. The Research Department and the Clinical Research Unit carry out various trials that cannot be run in the outpatient clinic.

First visit
At your first meeting with the doctor responsible for the project, you will receive detailed information about

  • the purpose of the study
  • how long the study lasts
  • how many visits are necessary
  • etc.

You will be given a written project description that also contains information about your rights as a study participant. Only then should you decide whether you want to participate in the project. If you consent to participate, you might be asked to give a blood sample and undergo study-related examinations.

If you are scheduled for an examination after an overnight fast, we can offer you breakfast in the department. Should the examinations continue until after lunchtime, we can offer lunch too.

Same treatment options
Of course, you do not forfeit the treatment options related to your routine check-ups at the outpatient clinic:

  • routine blood tests
  • visits to the eye clinic
  • visits to the podiatrist (if you have foot problems caused by the diabetes)
  • course offers etc – please see the notice board in the outpatient clinic
